We are not born patient

One of the biggest spiritual revelations came to me a few days ago as my three-month old son cried out in hunger waking up from a nap. He literally went from 0 to 10 in a matter of seconds. My toddler often begins to cry as she asks for a cup of milk and it does not immediately appear to be served up. It dawned on me that we are not born with a natural inclination to wait. It is something that is nurtured over the days, months and years after birth. As adults and spiritually mature souls, it is one of the most important aspects of our personality that we can feed and help to grow stronger in. The ability to wait. My grandmother taught me Luke 21:19 a long time ago and I had no idea the pearl of wisdom she was dropping on me “In your patience possess ye your souls” (KJV). Truly the key to spiritual success is in patience. It is such an integral ingredient that feeds faith, belief, steadfastness, tempering the tongue, I can go on and on. In fact as I look around at my life that is barely recognizable today to what it was five and ten years ago, one of the things I am most thankful for is that I waited out my youthful angst to settle in key areas in my life. Because of patience, I did not settle and because I did not settle God did things in a way I could not conceive, in a timeline that did not match my own. One thing is clear, it was worth the wait.
